Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the use of authentic materials affects students’ vocabulary achievement at a junior high school in Jember. The research design used in this study was a quantitative quasi-experimental approach. The population consisted of 7th-grade junior high school students, while the sample consisted of two classes: an experimental class and a control class. Each class had 32 students. The data collection method used in this study was a vocabulary test administered as a post-test. The data were analyzed using an independent-samples t-test with SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The results of the independent-samples t-test showed that the two-tailed significance value was 0.000, which was less than 0.05. Therefore, based on these results, the researcher can conclude that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. This indicates that the use of authentic materials has a significant effect on vocabulary achievement among students at one of the junior high schools in Jember.
