Abstract

Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is a long-term procedure that keeps brackets in the oral cavity, which is at risk of corrosion. Corrosion on metals is unavoidable but can be controlled by adding corrosion inhibitors. Corrosion inhibitors can be derived from natural materials containing flavonoids, phenols, steroids, triterpenoids, and tannins, for example avocado seed extract. This study aims to determine the natural inhibitor, namely avocado seed extract, in inhibiting the release of elements that make up orthodontic brackets made of stainless steel. The method used in this study is a laboratory experimental study using 1 initial bracket sample and 12 bracket samples with the treatment group soaked in artificial saliva and the treatment group soaked in avocado seed extract solution obtained by maceration method for 1 minute. The extract concentrations used were 1.5 g/L and 2 g/L. Then the samples in this study were subjected to SEM-EDX tests. The results of this study showed the highest release of Fe elements in the control group which was comparable to the highest C elements in the control group which were corrosion products. This is in line with treatment group 2 which showed the lowest release of Fe elements with the lowest C element content caused by the influence of the inhibitor. The conclusion of this study shows that avocado seed extract (Persea americana Mill) potential as a corrosion inhibitor on stainless steel orthodontic brackets
