Abstract

White-faced Partridge or WFP (Arborophila orientalis) is an endemic bird species found exclusively in the highlands of East Java, and is classified as vulnerable to extinction. This study aimed to determine the encounter rate of WFP on the eastern slope of Mount Ijen, East Java. Observations were conducted using camera traps installed at three locations, namely Gantasan, Erek-erek Geoforest, and Banyulinu. The camera traps were deployed for 101 days, and the collected data were analyzed using the Encounter Rate (ER) method to quantify the species encounter at each site. The finding revealed a low overall encounter rate of WFP (ER = 0,0363), with the highest encounter rate in Erek-erek Geoforest (ER = 0,0693). The daily activity pattern indicated that WFP is diurnal, being more active in the morning (06.00 08.00 WIB) and afternoon (14.00-16.00 WIB), activity captured by camera traps at 07.00-08.00 WIB. Dense tree crown cover (66%-95%) and elevation above 1200 meters above sea level were identified as key habitat character is influencing the presence of WFP. The results provide essential insights that can serve as the basis for developing conservation strategies to protect WFP on the eastern slopes of Mount Ijen
