| dc.description.abstract | The problem of patriarchy and discrimination against women is an issue that is currently being massively voiced through various media, including films. Film is a forum for public advocacy on social issues, especially patriarchy and discrimination against women. The large number of cases of verbal and physical violence against women has made Indonesia a gender-based violence emergency. Myths, social norms and other perpetuations are carried out by the society so that it seems to be a natural system that makes women increasingly unable to act freely like men. The aim of this research is to identify, describe and analyse the representation of patriarchy in the film Basri and Salma in a Never Ending Comedy according to the existentialist feminist school of Simone de Beauvoir. The qualitative method with the semiotic approach of Roland Barthes was chosen by the researcher as a research technique because there are concepts of signifier, signified and myth that are useful for dissecting scenes in a film to find out the meaning, both implicit and explicit. The result of this research is that there are fifteen important scenes in the film Basri and Salma in a Never Ending Comedy that vocally express the issue of patriarchy and discrimination against women, especially on the issue of normalising the wife's obligation to be able to provide children or offspring for the husband. The maternal function, which belongs only to women, makes them a submissive object not only of the husband but also of the family. The results of this research are based on the concept of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminist theory (The Other, Gender Construction and Existentialism) as an analytical knife or grand theory relevant to the discussion of patriarchal issues. | |
