This research aims to analyze the use of symbolism in Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun. The play portrays the struggles of an African American family living in Chicago during the 1950s as they face racial discrimination, economic hardship, and social inequality. Symbolism plays an important role in conveying the characters’ dreams, hopes, conflicts, and aspirations. This study focuses on identifying significant symbols in the play and examining how these symbols contribute to the development of its major themes. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the play serving as the primary source of data. The data are collected through close reading, note-taking, and classification of dialogues, stage directions, and events containing symbolic meanings. The analysis draws on literary approaches to symbolism to interpret the relationship between the symbols and the social and personal experiences of the characters. The analysis focuses on several important symbols, including Mama’s plant, the family’s insurance money, and the new house in Clybourne Park. Mama’s plant symbolizes her hope, resilience, and determination to nurture her family despite difficult circumstances. The insurance money represents opportunity, ambition, and the different dreams pursued by family members. Meanwhile, the new house symbolizes the Younger family’s aspiration for a better future, dignity, and freedom from racial and economic oppression. These symbols are interconnected and reveal the tension between individual desires and collective family aspirations. In conclusion, Hansberry uses symbolism to deepen the meaning of the play and communicate the importance of family unity, perseverance, identity, and equality. Understanding these symbols provides insight into the characters’ struggles and the broader social issues affecting African American communities during the 1950s.
