Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning
model based on Realistic Mathematics Education on students’ critical thinking
skills in mixed fractions at SDN Tanggul Kulon 01. The background of this research
was the low level of students’ critical thinking caused by abstract and teacher
centered mathematics instruction. This study employed a quantitative approach
using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The
participants were two fifth-grade classes: class VA as the experimental group
taught using PBL based on RME, and class VB as the control group taught using
conventional learning. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test
measuring students’ critical thinking skills. The data were analyzed using a t-test.
The results showed that the value of tcount = 5.93 was greater than ttable = 2.02
at a significance level of 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the two
groups. Furthermore, the PBL-RME model contributed 58.8% to the improvement
of students’ critical thinking skills. These findings indicate that PBL based on RME
has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to analyze, understand, and
solve mixed fraction problems. Therefore, this learning model is recommended as
an effective alternative for improving the quality of mathematics learning in
elementary schools.
