Abstract
This study aims to analyze how the media framed coverage of the 2023 U.S Supreme Court decision that struck down affirmative action in college admissions. This ruling generated widespread debate as it was closely related to issues of racial equality, discrimination, and access to education for minority groups in the United States. This study applies a qualitative approach using Robert M. Entman’s framing analysis model, which consists of four analytical elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgement, and treatment recommendation. Data were collected through a literature research and documentation from CNN and Fox News articles published after the ruling in 2023. The findings reveal different framing tendencies between CNN and Fox News. CNN tends to frame the decision as a social issue affecting racial diversity and minority groups’ access to higher education. In contrast, Fox News tends to emphasize the decision as an effort to uphold legal equality and a fair merit-based college admissions system. The differences in framing between the two media outlets underline the role of the media not only as a channels of information but also as an actor that shapes meaning through issue selection, emphasis on certain aspects, and the choice of narratives used. Therefore, the media play a strategic role in shaping public perceptions of education policy and racial justice in the United States.
