Abstract
Nurses in intensive care units often face work-related stress. When faced with
stressful situations and pressure, nurses may feel helpless and unable to provide
optimal care in accordance with their personal beliefs, making them susceptible to
moral distress. This can have a negative impact on the quality of nursing care
provided to patients. This study aims to analyze the relationship between moral
distress and caring behavior of nurses toward patients in the intensive care unit at
RSD dr. Soebandi Jember. This research used quantitative methods and analytical
observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study involved 63
intensive care nurses selected by a total sampling technique. Data were gathered
using the Measure of Moral Distress Scale – Healthcare Professionals (MMD-HP)
and Caring Behavior Inventory-24 (CBI-24). The results showed that most
respondents had low moral distress (84.1%), while respondents' caring behavior
was in good category (76.2%). Data analysis using Kendall's tau-c correlation test
showed a negative correlation between moral distress and caring behavior in
intensive care nurses at RSD dr. Soebandi Jember (p value = 0.001 <0.05, r =
0.347). This shows that the higher the level of moral distress experienced by nurses,
the lower the level of caring behavior they exhibit toward patients. Moral distress
is one of the issues that must be addressed in nursing practice to ensure that it does
not interfere with the quality of care provided to patients.
