Abstract
Introduction: Rampant caries is a rapidly progressing form of caries in which the
damage spreads to multiple teeth simultaneously, including teeth that are generally
resistant to caries. National data indicate that dental health problems among
children remain high, with a caries prevalence of 81.55% among children aged 3–
9 years. The incidence of caries-related oral health problems in Jember Regency
in 2024 was 10,239 cases, with Sumbersari District ranking first in terms of the
highest number of cases. A preliminary survey at Ar-Rochman Kindergarten
revealed a very high average def-t index score, with damage involving multiple
teeth in a single area, particularly in the upper anterior teeth. The objective of this
study was to determine the profile and distribution of rampant caries based on
severity, age, and gender among students at Ar-Rochman Kindergarten. Method:
This was a descriptive observational study using a sample consisting of all students
at Ar-Rochman Kindergarten, Sumbersari Subdistrict, Jember Regency. The sample
was selected using total sampling, consisting of 38 students who agreed to
participate in the study, as evidenced by informed consent forms approved by their
parents and their presence during the examination. The study was conducted using
primary data obtained through clinical dental caries examinations. The collected
data were subsequently calculated as frequencies and percentages using Excel. The
results show that there are more students with rampant caries than those without;
of the four severity levels of rampant caries, it was found that type III rampant
caries was the most common, while type I was the least common; based on age, 5-
year-old students were found to be the study group with the highest number of cases
of rampant caries; and based on gender, students with rampant caries were
predominantly female. Conclusions: Type III rampant caries is the most commonly
found severity type, with the highest prevalence observed among female students
aged 5 years.
