Abstract
Critical thinking skills among junior high school students in Indonesia remain relatively low in science education. The integration of project-based learning modules based on local potential is regarded as a promising strategy to solved this issue. This study aimed to develop, validate, and evaluate a project-based science learning module centred on the production of coffee aromatherapy candles, designed to enhance the critical thinking skills of seventh-grade students. The study employed the ADDIE development model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) at SMP Negeri 1 Panti, involving 30 students of Class VII F selected through purposive sampling. The module was validated by three validators comprising two science teachers and one lecturer from the Science Education Jember University obtained an overall validity score of 90.93%, classified as valid.. Practicality was measured via classroom observation checklists across four instructional meetings obtained score of 79%, categorised as practical, and effectiveness was determined through pretest-posttest scores analysed using the N-gain and student response questionnaire. the N-gain value was 0.68 (moderate category), reflecting an improvement in mean test scores from 39.6 (pretest) to 80.8 (posttest). The student response questionnaire produced a mean score of 86.7%, categorised as very good. These findings indicate that the project-based science learning module on coffee aromatherapy candle production fulfilled the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness, and recommended to foster critical thinking skills in science education at the junior secondary level.
