Abstract

Background: International job opportunities for nurses are increasing in line with the high demand for healthcare workers globally, encouraging nursing students to seek employment abroad. This motivation is influenced by students' perceptions of the nursing profession. A positive perception of nursing as a professional and highly valued occupation globally is expected to increase students' motivation to pursue an international career. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the perceptions of nursing students at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Jember, regarding the nursing profession and their motivation to work abroad. Methods: This study used a quantitative design with an analytical correlational approach and a cross-sectional method. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a total sample of 131 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires on students' perceptions of the nursing profession and motivation to work abroad. Results: The results showed that most respondents had positive perceptions of the nursing profession (99.2%) and high motivation to work abroad (90.1%). The Spearman rank correlation test showed a p-value of 0.000 with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.349, indicating a statistically significant relationship between students' perceptions of the nursing profession and motivation to work abroad, with a weak positive correlation. Conclusion: More positive students' perceptions of the nursing profession tend to be associated with increased motivation to work abroad. These findings demonstrate the importance of fostering positive perceptions of the nursing profession in supporting students' readiness for international career opportuities.
