Abstract

Conceptual understanding of science, such as the concept of the change of state of matter, is often difficult for students because it involves abstract molecular processes that are not easily observed directly. Conventional, monotonous teaching methods also tend to make students passive and less motivated, resulting in low comprehension of complex material. This study aims to determine the change in students’ conceptual understanding of the change of state of matter before and after the Modeling Based Learning (MBL) intervention, and analyze the implementation of MBL based stop motion animation in learning. The method used is a quantitative approach by measuring data through written test (pretest and posttest). The result show a positive trend of score improvement after the intervention was given. The class average showed a significant score increase of 1,6 point, indicating the high effectiveness of the implemented learning program. The implementation of MBL in learning the change of state of matter was carried out effectively through the activity of creating stop motion animations which serve as model production by students. This technique successfully facilitated cognitive processes and compelled students to represent abstract concepts (particle behavior and energy transfer) into observable visual forms, which is the core of successful MBL Implementation
