Abstract
Introduction: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways, accompanied by symptoms such as wheezing, recurrent coughing, and shortness of breath. A high body mass index (BMI) is one of the factors influencing the degree of asthma control. Several studies indicate that a high BMI (≥ 30 kg/m²) can exacerbate airway inflammation and reduce the effectiveness of asthma treatment. Occupational factors also play a significant role in determining the degree of asthma control. Several studies indicate that asthma patients working in the agricultural sector, manufacturing, construction, transportation, and jobs involving chemical exposure are at higher risk of uncontrolled asthma compared to workers in environments with minimal exposure.
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine whether there is an association between BMI and occupation type and the degree of asthma control in patients.
Method: This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross sectional approach conducted in 30 March – 23 April 2026. A purposive sampling technique was used, involving 86 patients. Body mass index, patients occupation, degree of asthma control data were collected using observation sheets and Asthma Control Test (ACT) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman Rho test.
Results: The result showed significant association between BMI (p value=0,048 and correlation coefficient=-0,214) and no significant association between occupation type (p value > 0,05) with degree of asthma control in patients..
Conclusion: In coclusion, BMI were associated with degree of asthma control in patients, while occupation type were not associated with degree of asthma control in patients.
