Abstract
The rapid growth of digital technology and social media has
increased adolescents’ digital engagement, raising the risk of Fear of Missing Out
(FoMO) and digital burnout. However, studies examining the relationship between
FoMO and digital burnout among adolescents in Indonesian school settings remain
limited. Therefore, this study aims to determine the relationship between FoMO and
digital burnout among adolescent social media users at SMA Negeri 2 Jember.
Method: This study a cross-sectional approach. A total of 265 students from grade
X and XI at SMA Negeri 2 Jember were selected using multistage sampling with the
first stage being proportionate sampling and the second stage being simple random
sampling. The instruments showed good reliability, with cronbach’s alpha values
of 0.763 for the FoMO scale consisting of 10 items and 0.918 for the digital burnout
scale consisting of 24 items, both assessed using a five-point likert scale. Data were
analyzed using Spearman’s Rank correlation test Result: The findings showed that
most respondents experienced moderate levels of FoMO and digital burnout, with
statistical analysis indicating a significant positive correlation between FoMO and
digital burnout (r = 0.327; CI = 95,0%). Analysis: The correlation coefficient
demonstrates a positive relationship with weak strength, indicating that higher
FoMO levels tend to be associated with higher levels of digital burnout among
adolescents. Discussion: These findings support previous research suggesting that
FoMO encourages excessive engagement with social media, which may lead to
emotional exhaustion and mental fatigue. Therefore, appropriate management of
social media use and the development of healthy digital habits are essential to
reduce FoMO and prevent digital burnout, thereby supporting adolescents’ mental
well-being.
