Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis in children remains a public health problem that requires long-term treatment and a high level of adherence. One factor presumed to influence treatment adherence in children is the family’s socioeconomic status. This study aimed to analyze differences in socioeconomic status in relation to adherence to anti-tuberculosis drug (ATD) therapy among children with pulmonary tuberculosis in Jember Regency. This study employed a quantitative design with a comparative analytic approach. A total of 86 children with pulmonary tuberculosis undergoing treatment in five primary health care centers in Jember Regency were selected using probability sampling with a purposive sampling method. Data were collected using a respondent characteristics questionnaire, the Kuppuswamy socioeconomic status scale, and the Morisky Green Levine Adherence Scale (MGLS). Data analysis was conducted using the Kruskal–Wallis test. The results showed that most children came from families with lower-middle socioeconomic status (36.0%), and the majority demonstrated a high level of adherence to ATD therapy (91.9%). The Kruskal–Wallis test indicated a statistically significant difference between socioeconomic status and adherence to ATD therapy among children with pulmonary tuberculosis (p = 0.009). This study concludes that socioeconomic status plays a role in differences in treatment adherence to anti-tuberculosis drugs among children with pulmonary tuberculosis in Jember Regency.
