Abstract

The May 1998 tragedy is one of the darkest chapters in history, marking the end of the New Order era. In May 1998, there were incidents of looting, burning of city centers and residents' homes, and even acts of violence and sexual assault against women, especially those from the Chinese ethnic group. TGPF reported that the number of recorded rape victims as of early July 1998 was 168, and it is likely that there were many other victims outside Jakarta who were not reached. Of this number, 85 victims have been successfully verified. Despite official reports and the state's acknowledgment through the TPGF and Komnas Perempuan, Fadli Zon, the Minister of Culture, denied the May 1998 rape tragedy, calling it a rumor and saying there was no evidence. Kompas.com actively reported on Fadli Zon's controversial statement. This phenomenon is interesting to study using Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model. This study focuses on the dimensions of text, social cognition, and social context. This type of research is qualitative research that produces descriptive data using documentation techniques as data collection techniques. The results of this study obtained data that (1) the text dimension shows how language is used to build credibility between figures; (2) the social cognition dimension is constructed based on event schemas and role schemas; (3) and the social context of this reporting is in a traumatic situation
