Keterlibatan Orang Tua Terhadap Aktivitas Anak Tidak Sekolah di Desa Biting Kecamatan Arjasa Kabupaten Jember

Abstract

The issue of out-of-school children remains a challenge in education because it impacts human resource development and educational sustainability. Parental involvement is crucial for the activities and educational sustainability of children who are no longer attending formal school. This study describes parental involvement in the activities of out-of-school children in Biting Village, Arjasa District, Jember Regency. The focus of this research includes parental involvement in communication and decision-making related to the activities of children who are not continuing their education.This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, located in Biting Village, Arjasa District, Jember Regency. Informants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of four key informants: two parents, one out-of-school child, and two other out-of-school children categorized as dropouts and children who are not continuing their education. One supporting informant, a village operator, was also selected. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was based on the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. Data validity was assessed through extended participation, observational persistence, and triangulation of sources, techniques, and time.Research findings indicate that parents remain involved in their children's activities even after they drop out of school. Communication with parents of children who drop out actively motivates, guides, supervises, and supports their children so they can continue their education while working through non-formal programs. In contrast, communication with families of children who discontinue education focuses more on daily life and allows children greater freedom. Most children's discontinuation of school is based on their own wishes, and parents generally accept this decision. However, some parents of children who drop out of school still try to encourage their children to complete their education through non-formal education programs. This research indicates that parental involvement in children's educational continuity is still less than optimal, as parental involvement focuses more on providing daily support than facilitating their return to school.
