Panggung Depan Pengemis Jalanan (Analisis Manajemen Kesan Pengemis di Jalur Gumitir Jawa Timur)

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the impression management strategies applied by beggars in the Gumitir Mountain area to gain sympathy from road users. This phenomenon is examined due to the geographical characteristics of the research location, which is an interprovincial transit route with winding and steep roads. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, applying Erving Goffman's dramaturgical perspective, specifically focusing on visible behavior or the front stage concept. Data collection was conducted through participant observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with seven primary beggar informants. The results show that begging activities on the Gumitir Route employ four main strategies. First, physical appearance management through the use of worn-out clothes to reinforce the impression of economic hardship. Second, the use of body language, including outstretched hand gestures, bowing heads, and weak or sad facial expressions. Third, the application of verbal communication that is polite, brief, and non-coercive. Fourth, strategic location selection at sharp turns and steep inclines that force vehicles to slow down. In addition, there is a form of social order in the implementation of unwritten territorial divisions among beggars to avoid conflict. This study concludes that begging activities in the area are social actions planned consciously through the management of poverty symbols to achieve economic goals.
