dc.description.abstractBody Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used indicator of nutritional status that reflects the balance between body weight and height. In elderly individuals, aging is associated with various physiological changes, including alterations in body composition and bone metabolism, which may affect bone mass. Bone mass is an important component in maintaining bone strength and health and plays a role in preventing the risk of osteoporosis in the elderly. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and bone mass among elderly in Kaliwates District, Jember Regency. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 60 elderly women aged 50–69 years were selected using simple random sampling. Body Mass Index was calculated based on body weight and height measurements, while bone mass was measured using a Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) device. Data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation test to determine the relationship between the two variables. The results showed a significant positive correlation with a low strength between Body Mass Index and bone mass (r = 0.265; p = 0.041). Elderly women with higher BMI values tended to have higher bone mass values. This relationship is thought to be associated with increased mechanical loading on the bone and hormonal influences from adipose tissue that may support bone formation and maintenance. In conclusion, there is a significant positive relationship between Body Mass Index and bone mass among elderly in Kaliwates Village, with a low correlation strength. However, bone mass is also influenced by various other factors, including age, physical activity, hormonal changes, health status, and the aging process; therefore, BMI cannot be used as the sole indicator for assessing bone health in the elderly.
