| dc.description.abstract | This study aims to examine the rationality of farmers in Karangpring Village, Sukorambi District, Jember Regency, in choosing roses as a non-food commodity for their agricultural business. The reason for this phenomenon is studied because farmers decided to abandon food and horticultural commodities that were previously the main source of their livelihood and the community, then switched to choosing rose plants that cannot be consumed by themselves and their families but are considered to provide better economic benefits. This study uses a qualitative approach with phenomenology methods. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique with the selection of informants namely rose farmers with different land ownership areas, as well as women's farmer groups and village officials. Data collection was carried out through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and data interpretation. This study also uses the theory of farmer rationality from Samuel L. Popkin, in which there are three concepts used: the concept of betting and investment logic and the concept of villages. The results of the study indicate that the form of rationality of farmers in Karangpring Village in choosing non-food commodities, namely rose floriculture as a farming business, is evident from considerations of the ease of planting rose commodities, environmental conditions in Karangpring Village, profits and production costs for rose commodities, market access and farmers' bargaining position for rose commodities, considerations of area and land ownership status, savings and capital, and family responsibilities. From the results of the study and after analysis using Popkin's rational farmer theory, it is seen that farmers in Karangpring Village made a gamble in the form of their agricultural land which was used to replace the non-food commodity of rose floriculture. However, this gamble was made with the existence of more surplus in the form of reserves such as livestock and other land ownership, where livestock is a form of short-term investment made by farmers, and their long-term investment is that they use agricultural land to plant rose commodities that have an annual age. The results of the study also show that the absence of assistance from village institutions makes farmers independent and free in choosing commodities for their agricultural businesses. | |
