Abstract

Habib Sholeh’s Well is a local religious site believed to possess spiritual blessings and serves as a center for the community’s religious rituals. This study aims to analyze the construction of tradition surrounding the well of Habib Sholeh through its symbolic meaning, spiritual values, and local cultural elements that have been institutionalized into a social reality, accepted and passed down across generations. The research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, and is guided by Peter L. Berger’s theory of social construction, which includes the stages of externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The findings show that the virtue of the well is constructed through the process of externalization, which includes the origin of the well and the community’s acceptance of it along with other religious practices. It then undergoes objectivation through the institutionalization of traditions by the Sumur Barokah Al-Hamid Foundation and the Majelis Sholawat Mansub. Finally, internalization occurs as members of the Majelis Sholawat Mansub personally interpret the meaning of the well. The results reveal that the well has been socially constructed as a sacred space, a medium of healing, a symbol of blessing (barokah), and a source of life’s prosperity based on the spiritual experiences and social identities of the Majelis Sholawat Mansub community. This tradition not only serves as a means of seeking blessings but also strengthens local cultural values and the collective spirituality of the Lumajang society.
