A Semantic Analysis of Entailment Applied by Some Characters in the Princess Diaries Movie Script

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the entailments used by several characters in The Princess Diaries movie. It focuses on the types and orders of entailment are formed. Finding the type and order of entailment will make it easier to understand the meaning of the character's dialogue. This research is categorized as qualitative research. The method of this research is documentary research with note-taking techniques to collect the data and textual analysis to analyze the data. In the data collection, the data were identified as entailment using the theories of the types of entailment proposed by Griffiths (2003) and Murphy (2006) and the orders of entailment proposed by Yule (1998). The total entailment found in the movie is 35 data. The findings of the analysis show that there are 4 types and 2 orders of entailment. The types that are found are negative entailment, one-way entailment, two way entailment, and mutual entailment. The orders of entailment that are found are background entailment and foreground entailment.
