Abstract

The symbols found on boats are the result of social interactions between fishermen, combined with their experiences. The creation of these symbols on boats concretely embodies these two elements when combined. Therefore, the search for meaning focuses on the boat owner, who plays a role in embodying his experience. The use of symbols on fishing boats in Paloh Village is not limited by inherent rules. The freedom to create a series of symbols is also created and visible on the docks and beaches. The extensive use of symbols on payang boats, which adopt symbols from korsen boats and re-develop new forms that were initially only hopes, adds to the symbolism of identity and social relations. The purpose of this research is to explore the meaning of these three symbols in payang boats. Payang boats utilize these three symbols. The widespread use of symbols on payang boats is also supported by the boats themselves, which are the most widely used among other boats. The role of agents who encourage the procurement of payang boats in Paloh Village by providing loans is one key to the persistence and persistence of these symbols.
