Background. Dental pulp inflammation was progress of the caries process. The most common of pulp inflammation was caused by penetration of Streptococcus mutans. Streptococcus mutans will colonize and cause injury to the pulp tissue by infiltrating inflammatory cells. Currently, very less experimental studies talked about pulp inflammation. Objective. This research aimed to analyze the increase number of inflammatory cells PMN, macrophages and lymphocytes in mice exposed Streptococcus mutans in the pulp. Method. This study used experimental laboratory, the sample divided into three groups, control group (left molar RB rats were intact without treatment), P1 group (left molar RB rats were prepared to pulp perforation), and P2 group (molar RB rats were prepared to pulp perforation and induced Streptococcus mutans in the pulp chamber). Results. The highest average number of PMN inflammatory cells, lymphocytes and macrophages was in P2 group. PMN cells and lymphocytes found in both treatment groups (P1 and P2), whereas macrophage cells found only in P2 group. Inflammatory cells were not found in the control group. Conclusion. it could be concluded that Streptococcus mutans exposure could increase the number of inflammatory cells such as PMN, lymphocytes and macrophages.en_US
