dc.description.abstractBackground: Caries is an infectious disease on hard tissue, which caused by bacteria such as L.acidophilus. One way to prevent it by utilize natural antibacterial compound of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus). The peel and flesh of red dragon fruit contains antibacterial compound such as flavonoid, alkaloid, and terpenoid. Objective: To know the inhibitory effect of red dragon fruit peel and flesh extract to the growth of L.acidophilus and also the difference of inhibitory zone between the two extracts. Material and Methods: The material used red dragon fruit peel and flesh, ethanol 96% and L.acidophilus. The inhibition testing method was using well diffusion method. Red dragon fruit peel and flesh extract are obtained by maceration using ethanol 96%. The treatment was started by giving red dragon fruit peel and flesh extract each concentration 75% and 100%, chlorhexidine 0,2%, aquadest sterile in each of the wells, then incubated for 24 hours and was measured using digital caliper. Result and Conclusions: The results of Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney-Test showed significant difference between the study group with p<0.05. The conclusions showed that the peel and flesh red dragon fruit extracts had an inhibitory effect to the growth of L. acidophilus. The inhibitory effect of red dragon peel was higher than red dragon flesh extract.en_US
