dc.description.abstractThis thesis discusses about the success of Grameen Bank in alleviating poverty in Bangladesh based on Millennium Development Goals perspective. In analyzing, author uses Nurkse’s concept of Vicious Circle Poverty to investigate poverty phenomenon. In order to decreasing poverty, Nurkse offers a solution to cut the vicious circle poverty at the lowest productivity point by opening up capital access for the poorest people, because such an access would enable them to increase their productivity. Once their productivity increased, it would make their incomes also raised. Muhammad Yunus adopted Nurkse’s concept by creating Grameen Bank. The bank evidently has strategic role in releasing half of 7 millions of its member from poverty. The success is supported by a number of factors: First, Grameen Bank is truly understand the needs of the poor about financial service, particulary for the poorest. That is why it also prioritized the poorest to get the capital access. Second, it also performed counseling and controlling its debitors. Third, to support the empowerment of the poorest, the bank also able to drive business world to cooperate and participate in the project to be successful. Having such efforts the Grameen Bank could have been helping Bangladesh government to achieve the main purpose of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), namely fighting against poverty and hunger to create a better and fairer world for all parties in 21st century.en_US
