    Abstract
Traditional art is art that lives in society from generation to generation. Traditional art is a human work that involves the human mindset itself, both individually and in groups. Art is never separated from society as one of the most important parts of culture. Art is an expression of creativity from culture itself. The problem of this study is how the origin of the Jaran Slining Dance in Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency and how the development of the Jaran Slining Dance in Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency. The purpose of this study is to analyze the origin of the Jaran Slining Dance Art in Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency and to analyze the development of the Jaran Slining Dance Art in Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency. This study uses qualitative methods, namely Heuristics, Criticism, Interpretation, Historiography. Initially, the Jaran Slining Dance appeared in Lumajang around 1983 and was the work of Mr. Indriyanto from the Klakah area. At the beginning of the emergence of the Jaran Slining Dance, it was certainly due to the Jaran Kencak performance, as a replacement for the jaran kencak at that time which seemed expensive. The traditional art of the Jaran Slining Dance trained by Mrs. Muniati can attract the attention of the surrounding community in Candipuro District and also other Lumajang Regency departments. So that it makes it easier for the dancers to always maintain and preserve the local cultural heritage that needs to be preserved. That way, the local arts in each region do not just disappear. The Jaran Slining Dance is basically a fake horse whose horse's head is made of wood, and its body is made of a rectangular basket or large besek. The rectangular basket or large besek is a place for tobacco (Bodag). That is why similar arts such as the Jaran Slining Dance in Lumajang, in the Probolinggo area are called Jaran Bodag. In the middle of the basket, a hole is made as big as the body of the person carrying it.
