Analyzing The Pancasila Learner Profile Values in The Eighth Grade English Textbook
Abstract
This present study was aimed to investigate the representation of Pancasila Learner Profile values in an English textbook. A Qualitative Research Design was applied in this study. The data was specifically obtained from an eighth grade English textbook for junior high school students which only focused on its visual content known as a comic strip. The data were collected using a documentation technique involving a coding guideline adopted from Permana and Agusta (2023), which was based on the Pancasila Learner Profile values made by the Ministry of Education and Culture. By using a Content Analysis method, the findings disclosed that three out of six dimensions of the Pancasila Learner Profile values were found in eight comic strips inside the textbook. Five comic strips were found representing Believing the God Almighty and Having a Noble Character as the most frequent value, followed by two comic strips representing the Mutual Cooperation value, and lastly, one comic strip was representing the Critical Thinking value. These findings lead to a conclusion that this textbook is in line with the Independent Learning Curriculum’s objective to instill a character education to the students. By using eight comic strips to represent the Pancasila Learner Profile values, students are expected to possess personal morality and awareness of environmental issues as covered in the Believing the God Almighty and Having a Noble Character value. However, this textbook is missing another three dimensions namely Global diversity, Independent and Creative value in the comic strips. Therefore, more thorough investigation regarding the Pancasila Learner Profile values based on the text aspect in the textbook should be carried.
