Abstract
Appropriate parenting style will support children's development from all
aspects, especially in character building. The character of a child basically
cannot just grow, but needs to be directed, nurtured and developed properly so
that it becomes a positive character. This study aims to determine the parenting
style of single parents used in shaping the positive character of early childhood.
The research method used in this study is descriptive with a qualitative approach.
Data collection techniques were carried out using observation, interviews, and
documentation. The data were then analyzed using data reduction techniques,
data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that
the parenting style adopted by single parents is a mixed parenting style between
democratic parenting and authoritarian parenting. Through the application of
mixed parenting styles, positive character traits in early childhood can be formed,
such as honesty, discipline, tolerance, and independence. The democratic
parenting style that is applied is that children are given freedom but still under
the supervision of parents, build good communication with children so that
children can be open and easily tell stories, give children time to play, and
provide directions and advice to children. Meanwhile, the authoritarian parenting
style that is applied is not always reining in or being rude to children, but as a
form of firmness from parents to children and is applied when children do not
want to obey or fight parents. So that authoritarian parenting can have a positive
impact on children if parents apply it for positive desires.
