The Use of Semantris in Improving Vocabulary Mastery for the 8th Grade Students

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental aspect of language learning, yet many students struggle with retention and application. This study focused on improving the vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students through the use of Semantris as a supporting tool. The participants were deliberately selected based on a preliminary study that identified the students' difficulties in understanding vocabulary. To address this gap, the research also aimed to enhance students' vocabulary mastery by incorporating various exercises, such as vocabulary log and quick word association to help them understand the vocabulary more easily. This study was carried out in two cycles, with each cycle including two implementation sessions and one vocabulary test session. Data for the study were gathered through vocabulary tests. The results demonstrated significant progress in students' vocabulary mastery, with the percentage of students meeting the target criterion rising from 24% in the first cycle to 70% in the second cycle. These findings suggest that Semantris is an effective tool for supporting language learning, especially in improving students' vocabulary mastery.
