The Representation of Gender Equality in The ELT Workbook for Junior High School Students
Abstract
Gender Equality is one of the main aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. However, gender inequality in Indonesia is still long to meet the proper indication of SDGs 2030. In terms of educational field, gender issue can occur in many forms, including in educational materials such as textbooks and workbooks. Addressing this, this research is compiled to uncover how gender equality is depicted in a junior high school workbook. Through a critical discourse analysis framework by Fairclough, it reveals that most of the context within the workbook has considered gender equality awareness, only few of visual representation consist of gender stereotype. This suggests that while progress is being made in addressing gender equality in educational materials, there is room for improvement. Therefore, educational material publishers and English Foreign Language (EFL) teachers should also focus on reflecting gender equality awareness, emphasizing the need to continue fostering gender equality awareness in teaching materials. By doing so, the education system can contribute to the broader goal of achieving gender equality as outlined in the SDGs main points.
