The Use of sq3r Strategy to Improve Reading Comprehension Achievement of Vocational High School Students’
Abstract
This research was conducted by using classroom action research. This research focused
on the use SQ3R strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement and
students’ active participation of recount text at SMK Al Ikhlash Rampuji. Reading is the
interaction between the text and the reader that creates meaning. In reading process, there must
be an understanding between those who make a communication especially for the writer and
reader.
The reasons of conducting this research were to solve the students’ problems and to
improve students’ achievement in reading comprehension of recount text. Based on the
preliminary study, it was found that the eleventh grade students had problems in reading
comprehension. It was known from their scores that they were under the minimum score of
that school, they had less motivation, less active participation, lack of vocabulary and they have
difficulty in finding the main ideas. The percentage of the students who achieved the minimum
of standard score (33%) which was the lowest among the other eleventh grade classes.
Moreover, their mean score of reading comprehension was 70. It did not achieve the minimum
of standard score for the English Subject at SMK Al Ikhlash Rambipuji.
This research was conducted in 1 cycle with two meetings of the action implementation
and one meeting for administering the test. The researcher were used to teach reading
comprehension by using the SQ3R strategy. The data collection methods used were reading
comprehension test and observation in the form of checklist. The observational checklist
consisted of 6 indicators, (1) Students skim the text for an overview of main ideas (Survey), (2)
Students formulating questions that related to the text (Question), (3) Students read the whole
text (Read), (4) Students can write the main points by their own words (Recite), (5) Students
can review the information of the text (Review), (6) Students do the students worksheet.
