dc.description.abstractIn this era where technology and global communication were upgrading around the world, the demand of English mastery is becoming greater. Related to this condition, Indonesian government is applying the statement of the Act of Minister of National Education No. 22 year 2006 about the standard content of primary and secondary education, where English takes part as a compulsory subject at curriculum. In line with that statement English in Indonesia must be taught from elementary school to both senior and vocational high school. In addition, English for vocational high school should put stress on the needs of learners, different with English for Senior high school that using a General subject English for vocational school also contains a specific skill that they can use to fulfill the labor demand and their vocational skills. Multimedia Major as the one who provides a material that related to the technology nowadays becomes one of popular department at vocational school. This research was aimed to know what the multimedia major student’s need related to their major in learning English. The preliminary study was done by interviewing the English teacher of eleventh grade student at SMK Islam Bustanul Ulum Jember . it was found that in vocational high school that we know as a school that focusing to the student’s future job didn’t have any ESP materials rather than using ESP material the textbook used from the government are a textbook for EGP learners. So this study was taken to know what the needs of the student’s in order to developing an ESP materials forstudents in vocational high school especially in multimedia department. The participant of this study was the English teacher, the vocational teacher and 35 eleventh grade students of multimedia major. The researcher gain an information by the teacher using semistructured interview and for the students the researcher using a questionnaire to gain depth information about the students by using basturkmen’s approach. Based on two main research data which were need analysis questionnaires and semistructured interview, it is conluded that ESP materials for multimedia department are significantly needed. On the contrary, the number of desired materials were limited. It is supported by the statement of the English teacher who argued that both the government and school only provided EGP for vocational high school students which is inappropriate. This fact opens an opportunity for the future researcher to develop the materials demanded. Eventhough, developing apropriate materials requires several clues. Therefore, the data collected from this research may store some important information needed by the future researchers which share the same interest.en_US
