The Representation Of Humanism Values In The Indonesian Prescribed Elt Textbook For Junior High School Students
Abstract
This research reports the analysis of humanism values represented in ELT textbook for the seventh grades of Junior High School in Indonesia. In order to investigate the visual and textual materials in the textbook, Critical Discourse Analysis was carried out as the research design and Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional model that consists of three stages of analysis; Description, Interpretation, and Explanation. The humanism values represented in the selected textbook were analyzed in each chapter in terms of reading texts and images according to Adam’s (2003) indicators; (1) self-respect and the respect of others, (2) self-love and the love of others, (3) meaningful experience, activities, and relationships, (4) a physical environment that expresses or embodies one’s civilization. The result shows that there is an imbalance presentation of humanism values in the textbook where humanism values are less represented through verbal text rather than visual artifacts.
