    Abstract
    Fathers involvement in parenting can affect children's development and mental health of mothers. This study aims to assess the relationship between father involvement and stress levels of mothers in the family with mental retardation children. This study used a cross sectional approach with 62 respondents using total sampling technique. Data were collected by questionnaires of Father's involvement and Parental Stress Scale and were analyzed using Spearman rank test. The results of father involvement in parenting showed 54 (87.3%) people were in the high category, 7 (11.6%) were in the moderate category, and 1 (1.3%) were in the low category. Stress levels found that 51 (82.3%) mothers had mild stress, 11 (17.7) were in the moderate category, and none in the severe category. The results of the relationship test showed there was relationship between father involvement in parenting and maternal stress levels with a negative correlation coefficient (r= -0.272; p value = 0.033). Disability level of the child is one of several factors that influence father involvement in parenting. Employment and status of biological or unbiological parents did not have a significant influence in this study. The high involvement of fathers showed fulfillment of children's needs, one of support and ways to respect mothers, so it was impacts on low maternal stress levels. Fathers and mothers need to provide support for each role in caring for mentally retarded children, it will maximize parenting in mentally retarded children and can stimulate child development.
