Background: Resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) is one of the restorative material
frequently used in dentistry. RMGIC is brittle and the mechanical properties is poor because the
particle sizes are tiny and bonding of components is weak. To improve the mechanical properties,
RMGIC is added by alternative materials i.e chitosan. Objective: To investigate the effect of chitosan
addition to the compressive strength of RMGIC. Methods: Twenty four RMGIC samples were molded in
silinder mold space, 3mm in diameter and 6 mm in height. The samples were devided into 4 groups,
which they were control group or without chitosan addition, and treatment groups with 0.013%,
0.026%, and 0.039% chitosan addition. The compressive strength was performed using a universal
testing machine with 1 mm/minute of crosshead speed until fracture. Result. The addition of 0.039%
chitosan increased the compressive strength of RMGIC. Conclusion: Chitosan enhanced the
compressive strength of RMGIC.
