Abstract
The use of herbal medicines has increased in recent decades, mainly in developed countries, due in part to the widespread assumption that herbal medicines have natural and harmless characteristics. Accordingly, with their popularity and global market expansion, the safety of herbal medicines has become a major concern in public health. Some causes of the poor quality are substitution or misidentification with toxic plant species, and use of raw material contaminated hazardous substances, such as chemical contaminants and radioactive particles. This makes several precautions must be taken to avoid contamination and ensure safety and conformity to quality standards of herbal medicines.
