The Effect of Teaching Derivational Affixes by Morphological Process on the Second Year Students' Vocabulary Achievement at SMAN I Karangrejo Tulungagung in the 2004 / 2005 Academic Year
Abstract
Vocabulary is important to be mastered in learning English. By mastering the knowledge of vocabulary, it is easier for the students to learn the language skills namely reading, speaking, writing and listening. Teaching derivational affixes by morphological process can be used as one of the technique in teaching vocabulary. This research was intended to prove whether or not there is an effect of teaching derivational affixes by morphological process on the second year students' vocabulary achievement at SMAN I Karangrejo Tulungagung in the 2004/2005 academic year. The research design was quasi experimental. The research area as SMAN I Karangrejo Tulungagung. The respondents were the second year studets of SMAN I Karangrejo Tulungagung in the 2004/2005 academic year that were taken by cluster random sampling by lottery. The number of respondents was 88 respondents. Vocabulary test was used to get primary data, while the supporting data were taken from the interview and documentation. From the results of data analysis, it was found that the value oft-statistic was 2,78 and the value oft-table on the 5% significance level was 2,00. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of teaching derivational affixes by morphological process on the second year students' vocabulary achievement at SMAN I Karangrejo Tulungagung in the 2004/2005 academic year. The result showed that the students who were taught vocabulary through derivational affixes got better scores of vocabulary test than that the students who were taught vocabulary by translation.
