THE REPRESENTATION OF WIZARDS IN URSULA K LE.GUIN’S A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA AND J. K ROWLING’S AND J. K ROWLING’S HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE (A COMPARATIVE STUDY) HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE
Abstract
This thesis is aimed to compare the representation of wizards in the main
characters of A Wizard of Earthsea and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The
representation of wizards is the image of the wizards. A Wizard of Earthsea is the
one of novels written by Ursula K. Le Guin in 1968 which got many awards. Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is written by J.K Rowling in 1997 is also a novel
which got many awards.
Ursula K. Le Guin made a wizard in her novel who is named Ged. He is a
wizard who has a long wand but it does not always help him in creating magic, he
needs to know the real name of the things to do magic. Ged also lives side by side
with the villager who do not do the magic to help them in many things. In Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the wizard is named Harry Potter. Rowling described
her wizard who does not realize that he is a wizard. There are several things which
distinguish Ged and Harry Potter, for instance; their way to use the magic spells.
Although, there are also some similarities of those wizards.
There are some problems which are discussed in this thesis. Firstly, how the
the wizards are represented in the novels. Secondly, the similirarities and differences
of the two wizards. To analyze the object matter this thesis uses structural approach
and the theory of comparative literature. Structural approach is used to find the
intrinsic elements of the novels, then the thesis focuses only on the character and
characterization to know the representation of wizards in the two novels.
Comparative literature is used to find out the differences and similarities in the
representation of wizards. This thesis uses an inductive method to observe of the
particular of facts, then it is concluded into the general idea. The result of the thesis is written in the last chapter. Ged and Harry Potter
have the similarites in the powerful magic, having the ability since their childhood,
learning in school of wizards, physical appearances and the way of creating the
representation of wizards. They also have the differences such as their origin, the way
of life, the way of using magic spells, and the characteristics. It can be concluded that
the images of wizards can be represented in many ways, especially in Guin’s and
Rowling’s novels.
