This thesis is entitled “A Discourse analysis on Give Your Body and Mind A Break Through Yoga in The Jakarta Post on July 2009”. The aims of this study are to describe the applicat ion of grammatical cohesive devices and lexical cohesive devices to the article of Give Your Body and Mind A Break Through Yoga in The Jakarta Post Newspaper and to find out whether grammatical cohesive devices and lexical cohesive devices can make the text coherent and unified. This thesis uses library research by reading some books in the library to find out concepts that are relevant to the theoretical framework of the thesis. The data of this study are collected from a written text. The qualitative data are in the form of descriptions and not in the form of numbers. Documentary (bibliographical) study is applied to this study as the technique of data collection, and the data are taken from Give Your Body and Mind Through Yoga in The Jakarta Post Newspaper which was published in 2009. Only one article was analyzed. This study is a descriptive study which describes grammatical cohesive devices (Reference, Substitution, Ellipsis and Conjunction) and lexical cohesive devices (Reiteration and Collocation).

    Abstract
This thesis deals with discourse analysis which concerns with the analysis of grammatical and lexical cohesion within a text. The text analyzed in this thesis is in the form of radio script. The script entitles Cliffhanger: Rock Climbing as Sport and Art which is taken from VOA “Special English” radio broadcast. The script is derived from the show aired in December 2009. The writer intends to find out what grammatical cohesive devices (reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction) and lexical cohesive devices (repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, meronym, and collocation) are in the script and their contribution in making the script coherent and unified. The data applied in this writing are qualitative data which mean the data are written text. Data collection in this thesis is documentary study. This thesis is a descriptive study which elaborates grammatical cohesive devices and lexical cohesive devices and their contribution in the script. The result of this thesis indicates that the cohesive devices help to find the main ideas in the script. Those main ideas make the script coherent. In conclusion, the analysis of cohesive devices is used to know how coherence is achieved by employing cohesive devices in the script.

    • In this thesis, I will focus on the systemic functional analysis on the lyrical text of song. Systemic functional is derived from two words that are systemic and functional. The theory is systemic because language is interpreted as a system network of meanings (choices or options) realized by the forms. And the theory is functional because language functions as a resource for making meanings. The song will be analyzed in this thesis is Avenged Sevenfold’s song: Afterlife. Avenged Sevenfold is an American rock band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The band consists of vocalist Matthew Charles Sanders (M. Shadows), lead guitarist Brian Elwin Haner Jr. (Synyster Gates), rhythm guitarist Zachary James Baker (Zacky Vengeance) and bassist Jonathan Lewis Seward (Johnny Christ). In December 2009, the drummer James Owen Sullivan or The Rev died of a drug overdose, and then the band replaced him with the Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. The song Afterlife talks about a man who dies early and finds himself in heaven. But, he realizes that he has too many things to do on Earth, and to go back and make it right he has to escape from the afterlife. The problem in this thesis is how to find out the lexicogrammatical patterns, semantic component, cohesive devices, and situational dimensions on the Avenged Sevenfold’s song: Afterlife. The result of this analysis shows that lexicogrammatical patterns (Transitivity, Mood and Theme) explain semantic components (Experiential meaning, Interpersonal meaning and textual meaning), cohesive chains explain cohesive devices (Lexical Cohesion and Personal Reference), and also semantic components and cohesive devices explain situational dimensions (Field, Tenor and Mode).
