A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON ALICE BROWN’S THE CRY FAIRY
Abstract
The Cry Fairy is one of written languages especially narrative text based on
generic structure of storytelling. Generic structure of the Cry Fairy consists of
orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution that are displayed by the
grammatical and lexical items. The kind of grammatical and lexical items make the
text coherent and unified. The texture in the Cry Fairy is merely displayed by some
grammatical and lexical items that interact; therefore, this thesis analyzes cohesive
device, texture, and context in the Cry Fairy. Cohesion devices analyze the
grammatical and lexical items in the text that refers to the grammatical and lexical
cohesion. The texture in the Cry Fairy is analyzed by using chain interaction that
realize context in this short story.
This thesis is a quantitative and qualitative research; therefore, the methods
used are interpretative and statistical. The interpretative method is used when I
analyze the grammatical and lexical items in this text. These refer to the qualitative
data that form the text because the primary data in this text is a short story. On the
other hand, the statistical method is used to count the number of grammatical and
lexical cohesion, and tokens in this text. This refers to quantitative data that form
numerical. In addition, the manner of collecting data is non–experimental because
this thesis uses all sentences in this text.
All data are analyzed by using cohesive devices to refer to the analysis of
grammatical and lexical items. Then, the number of the grammatical and lexical items
are counted and classified into two parts: relevant token and peripheral token. The
relevant tokens are used in lexical chain. Lexical chain itself manifests the individual
messages that describe the texture in this text.
This thesis found that the grammatical cohesive devices consist of reference
(432 items), conjunction (162 items), ellipsis (5 items) and substitutions (2 items). On
the other hand, the lexical cohesive devices are dominated by repetition (202 items)
that shows the same lexical item. Other lexical cohesive devices are applied in the
Cry Fairy as synonym (116 items), Antonym (34 items), Co-meronym (32 items),
Collocation (28 items), Meronym (14 items), hyponym (10 items) and co-hyponym
(10 items) respectively. They make this text coherent and unified because they give
different contributions to describe the semantic relation in this text. In addition, those
grammatical and lexical items describe the texture in this text by using chain
interaction that realizes the context of the Cry Fairy.
