Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction: Jember Debris Flow Experiences
Abstract
The 2006 Jember’s flood and debris flow woke the community up that they live in the vulnerability of disaster. Since then both technical and non technical activities had been conducted to reduce the disaster risk. This paper intends to present authors’ experience of performing community based disaster management activities in Jember. Those are community profiling, community workshop and evacuation drill. Careful observation of the activities points to the big chance that communities require disaster knowledge and good leadership to promote self community based disaster risk reduction activities. Moreover, local government support will accelerate community awareness of disaster risk
