Abstract: Intensive vegetable cropping is generally characterized by comperatively high nitrate leaching leading to contamination of the ground water. Reasons for this are high N fertilizer input necessary to maintain high yield and quality and low N efficiency by especially leafy vegetables such as lettuce. The low N efficiency of lettuce is mainly due to its shallow rooting system which leads to low uptake efficiecy of N03- from the subsurface soil.
