Abstract: This study purposed to analyze in vitro the effect of coffee and infection of periodontitis bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis on atherosclerotic marker, particularly, macrophaque foam cell formation and scavenger receptor (Sc-R) expression. Research objects are P. gingivalis ATCC 33277, ground coffee solution, and macrophage that were obtained from culture of human peripheral blood monocytes (PBM), Macrophaque were divided into three groups namely 1) macrophaque exposed to P. gingivalis, normolipid plasma and coffee, 2) macrophaque exposed to P. gingivalis and normolipid plasma (without coffee) and 3) macrophaque exposed to normolipid plasma (control). All of groups macrophaque were incubated for 2 days, 37ºC, 5% CO2. Foam cell were identified by means of Oil RedO staning, while Sc-R expression using Immunocytochemistry method. Results showed that coffee significantly (p<0,05) reduced foam cell formation and scavenger receptor expression. In Conclusion, coffee inhibited atherosclerotic marker in vitro, in particular foam cell and scavenger receptor expression. Further study were needed to elucidate the effect of coffee and periodontitis on atherosclerosis in vivo.
