Abstract: The increase of fossil fuel consumption leads to depletion of petroleum availability. Therefore, an alternative enviromental friendly energy source is urgently needed. Green diesel is a renewable fuel obtained from vegetable oil through hydrogenation reaction. Hydrodeoxygenation is one of the hydrogenation reaction routes on fatty acids. This research uses stearic acid as a model compound to determine the catalysis activity on fatty acids conversion into green diesel. The catalyst used is molybdenum with several material supports i.e. SiO2, TiO2 and Al2O3. This research scrutinizes the effect of material support on catalysis activity. Formic acid is used as a hydrogen source because it is readily decomposed producing H2 and CO2 gas. Hydrogenation reaction conducted by reflux method with varying formic acid addition during the reaction. In addition, an autoclave was also used in the hydrogenation reaction. The reaction temperatures used were 120°C, 140°C and 160°C. The products of the hydrogenolysis reaction are aldehyde, alcohol and ester groups. Generally reaction conducted in autoclave gives higher conversion than by reflux method. Mo/SiO2 shows the highest activity among the other catalysts with conversion of 42.188 % reached at 160°C in autoclave reactor, whereas Mo/Al2O3 and Mo/TiO2 also had highest performance in autoclave reactor at 120°C with conversion of 36.46 % and 33.06 % respectively.
