Abstract: | Benthic macroinvertebrates are a group of aquatic organisms capable of responding to water pollution. The presence of benthic macroinvertebrates provides an information to evaluate the water quality in the Antirogo River as an impact of potential contamination by anthropogenic activities. The pollution can disrupt the equilibrium of the Antirogo River, these could stimulate the problem for the ecosystem. The objective this study was to assess the water quality of the Antirogo River using the Family Biotic Index. A purposive sampling method was used to determine three research stations. Benthic macroinvertebrates samples were collected from three stations with five repetitions following identification based on morphology characteristics. The results of the study showed that the Antirogo River was polluted by some organic materials originating from domestic and industrial waste in the vicinity of the river, as well as from the riparian litter, with a water quality index value of 4.66. This index value falls within the range of 4.26-5.00, which is classified as good water quality. The most commonly found family was Heptageniidae with a total of 746 individuals, while the least commonly found family was Leptophlebiidae with only two individuals. The water quality of the Antirogo River is considered good because families with moderate tolerance values were found more frequently than families with low and high tolerance values. |
