dc.description.abstractThe study is firstly to find out the condition of hybridity suffered by Helga Crane as a mulatto depicted in the novel. Second is to describe the psychological effects of hybridity suffered by Helga Crane. Third is to know Helga Crane’s choices to escape from the uncomfortable feeling as a hybrid. Generally, it is to know how a mulatto faces the life as a hybrid. Furthermore, this thesis uses library research and qualitative method is applied to collect the data. The data are taken from several resources related to the postcolonial issue especially about hybridity. Quicksand novel is the primary object and Homi K. Bhabha’s The Location of Culture is the main source to the theory of hybridity under postcolonial study. All data are categorized in forms of narrations and statements. The steps of analysis begin from categorization of narrations and dialogues about the suffering of Helga Crane as a mulatto from her surroundings, the psychological sides suffered by Helga Crane and her decision to escape from an uncomfortable feeling. Then, all the data are processed by using the theory of hybridity within postcolonial perspective.en_US
