The purpose of this research was to optimization mucoadhesive buccal tablets of propanolol hydrochloride using bioadhesive polymer Hidroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) and Carbopol. Buccal mucoadhesive tablet of propanolol hydrochloride were developed to prolong release time and increase its bioavailability. The tablet were prepared by direct compression technique. The tablets were evaluated for hardness, friability, content uniformity, surface pH, swelling index, mucoadhesive strength, and in vitro drug release profile. The effect of HPMC and carbopol on drug release profile and mucoadhesive strength were investigated. Factorial design method was employed to create the optimum composition of HPMC and carbopol and used to determinate the effect of HPMC and carbopol and their interaction on mucoadhesive strength and dissolution efficiency. The optimum formula which obtain several criteria was investigated with overlay plot. The linier regression analysis and model fitting showed that all this formulation followed Higuchi model, which had highest value of correlation coefficient (r). Optimum compotition based on overlay plot for each tablet is 5 mg - 30 mg of carbopol at 100 mg of HPMC and 20 mg - 100 mg of HPMC at 30 mg carbopol.en_US
