A TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH NOUN CLAUSE INTO INDONESIAN IN JUDY WESTWATER’S STREET KID NOVEL: One Child’s Desperate Fight for Survival

Abstract

This thesis analyses a novel which has been translated into Indonesian entitled Street Kid: One Child’s Desparated Fight For Survival by Judy Westwater. The theory of the thesis is translation theory (Larson, 1989), English Noun Clause theory (Frank, 1972 and also Thompson & Martinet, 1986), and Indonesian Noun Clause (Lapoliwa, 1990 and Muslich, 1990). The aims of this study are to know the translation principle used in translating the novel, to describe how the translation result, and to find the deviation meaning in the translation in the novel. The analysis is based on translation theories, English Noun Clause theory, and Indonesian Noun Clause theory. This study uses mixed method, qualitative and quantitative method, to analyze the data. The data are taken from the novel, in English version and Indonesian version. They are collected by using stratified sampling method. The findings of this study show that translation principle used most to translate the English Noun Clauses (NCs) into Indonesian NCs is literal translation. However, there are some NCs or phrases in an English NCs translated into Indonesian by free or idiomatic translation. Additionally, there is no deviation meaning in translating the English NCs into Indonesian when using Literal translation or Idiomatic translation. In conclusion, both of the translation principles, Literal and viii Idiomatic translation, are used to translate the English NCs into Indonesian and there is no deviation meaning in that translation.
