    Abstract
Metformin HCl tablets are commonly used in the treatment of type II diabetes; however, they exhibit poor tabletability. This study aims to explore the effect of adding HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) on the crystallization process of Metformin HCl to enhance its tabletability. The objective of this research is to determine the characteristics of the crystalline solid of Metformin HCl resulting from crystallization with HPMC addition and to evaluate the impact of HPMC on the tabletability properties of Metformin HCl. The research was conducted through laboratory experimental methods, utilizing the solvent evaporation method for the preparation of Metformin HCl - HPMC crystals with varying concentrations of HPMC (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%). Characterization was performed using FTIR, DSC, and optical microscopy. Tabletability evaluation was conducted by measuring tensile strength and elastic recovery. The results indicated that the addition of HPMC significantly improved the tensile strength, with values increasing from 0.714 ± 0.063 N/mm2 for pure Metformin HCl to 1.051 ± 0.056 N/mm2 for Metformin HCl - HPMC 0.5%, 1.173 ± 0.045 N/mm2 for 1%, and reaching 1.225 ± 0.021 N/mm2 for 1.5%. Additionally, elastic recovery decreased from 0.285 ± 0.019% for pure Metformin HCl to 0.301 ± 0.006% for 0.5% HPMC, 0.303 ± 0.010% for 1%, and 0.283 ± 0.024% for 1.5%. The Metformin HCl - HPMC crystals exhibited a more organized and stable morphology compared to pure Metformin HCl. The addition of HPMC in the crystallization process of Metformin HCl positively influences tabletability properties, resulting in increased mechanical strength and tablet stability. These findings suggest that HPMC is a promising excipient for improving the formulation of Metformin HCl tablets.
